According to the study of 2000 individuals by personal health plan provider Simplyhealth, 17 million Brits want to take action to improve their long-term health and wellbeing. Why? Simplyhealth says it’s mainly because of the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, both from a financial and wider societal point of view.
The research also shows that Brits are increasingly taking personal accountability for their own health, with 8 in 10 (84%) saying they have “responsibility to take better care of their health” to support the NHS in 2021.
In fact, half of all Brits making New Year’s Resolutions this year say they want to take action to improve their long-term health because they recognise the impact that doing so can have on the NHS, their families and local communities.
Health and fitness goals continue to be popular among Brits who make New Year’s Resolutions. Indeed, 47% say they want to lose weight, 46% want to improve their overall fitness and 28% want to improve their diet. One in four (23%) are making health resolutions that will benefit their families.
Catherine Rutland, clinical director at Simplyhealth, said: "2020 reinvented our relationship with our personal health. While employees are more cognisant than ever about the strains on their health and wellbeing, the pandemic continues to create additional challenges. Now more than ever, employers are seeing their staff grappling to juggle work and home life, and with the added uncertainty of further lockdown measures, stress and anxiety will likely increase. As we continue to navigate the pandemic throughout 2021, it is vital employee health and wellbeing is front of mind for organisations across the country."
Romana Abdin, Chief Executive at Simplyhealth, added that the importance of health and wellbeing in the workplace should never be overlooked. She said employers have a responsibility to look after their employees’ health and wellbeing every day.
